Winter In Seoul, South Korea – Day 5

So this concluded my last day in Seoul. 5 days full of new experiences and met several new friends along the way.

I woke up around 7:30AM.  I'd prepared all my things and brought along my baggage with me since I will have a tight connection from DMZ bound to Incheon Airport. The four of us, including  Neung, a Thailander guy who arrived from Bangkok last night, left the house leaves the house around 9:30AM to catch our DMZ train at 10:34AM. So far, everything was doing great. All was according to plan. We alighted the train in Seoul Station at approximately 10:00AM. We walked towards the nearest exit.

Okay, but this time, the luck was not in my favor. I already tapped my card to exit the station when suddenly, my baggage does not fit-in in that particular type of tapping point - the one that has a rotating bar. I should have exit to the one with a gate type, I was trying to use the help machine yet the customer service on the other side was not an english speaker. I was quite worried since I had few minutes left and have to store my luggage to the lockers inside the Seoul Station. Until an old lady approached me and asked if she can held a hand. I told what happened and she immediately called the customer service and boom! I was good to go! Thanks to the old lady. Now, I need to run to catch the group.

There are several lockers of different sizes inside the Seoul Station, and then my 2nd unfortunate event happened. All the big lockers were occupied. And we barely have 10 minutes left before departure. I asked the information center if there are other places where I can leave my baggage and there, she point out the travel center at Basement 2. Quite far and long walk but time is running out. No choice but to run. I paid 7,000KRW for the baggage. and run back again to the departure area.

Me, Jojo and Neung were able to catch the train bound to DMZ. We reached the platform level just in a nick of time. Since Jenny went to DMZ few days ago, she decided to go somewhere else and will just be back in Seoul Station on the same time of our arrival.

The DMZ train were like an old school train compared to the ITX and KTX. When we went inside, the interior is very pleasant. Not the usual interior of trains. What amazed us is that DMZ train had a mini games during the trip. though we don;t understand anything they are saying, but I guessed it was fun.

The trip took about 1 hour and 30 minutes. From Seoul Station, we stopped on a few stations to pick some more passengers. DMZ ID were given and a form to be filled up (Some sort of Immigration Card). Then, when we reached Imnijgang Station, we were told to alight the train. We went inside the Imnijgang station for verification and clearance to proceed to Dorasan Station (where DMZ is located). We rode the same train after. 10minutes after departing Imnijgang, a pre-recorded audio were played inside the train and started to explain the areas we currently passing thru. Cool isn't it?

We reached Dorasan Station around 12:00NN. After alighting the train, we headed towards the exit where Military men where everywhere. Then the danger of DMZ area were playing in my head know. We lined up to the Walk Tour package and paid 8,700KRW. The other one is around 12,00KRW but I forgot what is the difference of the two package.

We rode the coach bus and went to our first destination, DORASAN OBSERVATORY. The first thing we did in the Dora Observatory is to listen to the lecture about DMZ. All the rest will depend on google. Since all the lectures where in Korean. Good right? haha!

After the lecture, we stepped outside towards the observatory. There several binoculars available to closely see the North Korean territory. Must put 500KRW in order for the binoculars to work.

Second destination is our Lunch. We did't purchase int he restaurant hence they allowed us to eat inside with our packed lunch. haha! We are cheap traveler.

Next destination is the Third Infiltration Tunnel. We were asked to proceed to one of the building. We were given Transcriber device and head inside the Audio-Visual Room where we watched a 15 minute film showing about Korean War. From here, we went to the building on the other side where the The Third Tunnel is located.

We were told to leave all our belongings to the lockers provided. Camera is strictly prohibited. Yet we managed to sneaked in our mobile phones.

We took Hard hat before we started our journeying going down the tunnel. As far as I remember, the total length of the connecting Tunnel (this is not the third tunnel) is roughly 750m and the path is quite steep. I almost backed out! after few minutes and few stops along the way, we reach the entrance of the third tunnel.

The worst part of this trip is going back up to that Connecting tunnel! There is some sort of Tram on the right side of the connecting tunnel. But they say that Blue Hard hat holders are the only one who has the privileged to ride the tram. Maybe they are the one doing the Travel Agency Package and not the Do-It-Yourself style.

Heading to our last destination, the Dorasan Peace Park. While strolling along the area, I saw this bridge which made by Filipino Artist. #proudtobepinoy

We departed Dorasan Station at exactly 4:10PM. We reached Seoul Station around 5:30PM and Jenny is already waiting for us in the platform. We spent few minutes together in the Main lobby of the Station then I bid goodbye to my friends. I immediately run towards the travel center to picked up my baggage and went further down to purchase ticket for Airport Express.

Another unfortunate thing happened. The next trip is 6:30PM. I was a bit worried not to catch my flight back home. Then the Train departed on time and I reached Incheon Airport around 7:20PM. Quick run from Station to Check In area. The queue was quite long and most of the passengers where Koreans and I am the last person to check in. Queue in the security and Immigration is long as well.

Good thing that the flight was delayed. I able to catch my flight back to Manila.

Winter In Seoul, South Korea – Day 4

It was my fourth day in Seoul. I woke up around 8:30AM, I think. Jenny is already up by the time me and Jojo got up. Our group will then be split into two. Me and Jojo were scheduled for a day trip to the Demilitarized Zone a.k.a DMZ and Jenny will go to War Memorial since she already went to DMZ days before we met each other.

We left the house around 9:50AM, just enough time to catch the 10:34AM schedule of train that departs Seoul Station bound to Dorasan Station (DMZ). Jenny committed herself to help us first in purchasing our tickets since the procedure is quite complex. haha

We reached Seoul Station around 10:15AM. We queued for our tickets. The lady forcing us to pay the original price of 16,000KRW for the DMZ Pass even though we were showing her the promo posted on their website. Promo stated that Non-Koreans are eligible for a discount and must pay only 10,000KRW. We were running out of time for debate. We decided to shift our plan and go somewhere instead.

We left the ticket counter and went to McDonald's to book DMZ pass online. I had a second thought if I still want to visit DMZ tomorrow since I need to leave Seoul Station by atleast 6:00PM to catch my 9:00PM flight back to Manila. Then I decided to give it a shot since DMZ train will arrive in Seoul from Dorasan around 5:30PM, I had 30 minutes leisure time, atleast.

Tickets were booked. 10,000KRW for DMZ pass. We just need to queue again in the ticket counter tomorrow to exchange our DMZ Pass to a Roundtrip Train Ticket.

After all the morning hassles, we decided to accompany Jenny to War Memorial. We went here few days ago but was able to explore only 1 room.

From Seoul Station, we walked towards War Memorial. It's quite far to think, but having a nice weather and cool friends by your side makes the walk a worthwhile experience. We first went to Lotte Mart and bought some snacks that we can munch along our way.

We reached War Memorial after around 30 minutes. Again, War Memorial is free of charge. This time, we were able to explore about 70% of the entire War Memorial Museum's Main Bldg. Still, there are areas outside worth a glimpse as well.

It was already 4:00PM when we bid goodbye to the Musuem. Again, we walked from War Memorial (Samgakji Station) towards Yongsan Station and went to E-Mart to buy ingredients for our Dinner and snack for tomorrow.

When we reached home, Jenny prepared our dinner while the rest of us is waiting and resting. After we had our dinner, a new guy came in. His name was Neung, a Thailander guy who just arrived in Seoul.

Our host arrived from work and felt sick. Yet he invited us to go out and drove towards Cheonggyecheon Strean, Gwangjang Market, Dongdaemun Design Plaza and the Shopping Malls.

Winter In Seoul, South Korea – Day 3

On my third day, we'd decided to go to Namiseom famously known as Nami Island / Naminara Republic. From our host's House, we went to Oksu Station to catch the 12:20PM Schedule of ITX (Intercity Train Express) bound to the province of Cheongchun hence, we alight at Gapyeong Station.

The ITX started to operate last February 2014. It reaches a maximum speed of 180 KPH. Taking ITX will save you around 25 minutes compared to taking an all-stop train via Gyeongchun Line that takes you around 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach Gapyeong. Fare from Oksu-Gapyeong Station via ITX is 4,100KRW. While taking the All-Stop Train saves you half the price.

When we reached Oksu Station, we were kinda confused since there are no signage to where the ITX rail was located. We were in a hurry since it’s already 12:00NN and we will definitely lose a lot of time if we were not able to catch the ITX. After several minutes of breeze walking and adrenaline rush, we were able to locate the ITX rail. Then head off immediately to the designated platform. And Yes! We made it to ITX.

While feeling excited on our seats, we started to debate whether our T-Money cards were accepted in ITX. We tried to backtrack what happened and no one remembers if we tapped out or not  or if there were any tap out machine from Metro Subway going to ITX. We felt nervous riding the train without paying the fare. I remembered that there is this machine on the upper floor where we can buy the ticket but we were confused if we need to purchase or not since we didn't tapped our card yet.

Few minutes had passed and we saw an inspector checking the tickets of other passengers. We started to felt a bit nervous. When it was our turn for inspection, we showed our T-Money. The inspector told us that it was not accepted in ITX. No major issue were raised. We simply paid our ticket on the spot. 4,100 KRW for Oksu Station to Gapyeong Station.

After 45 Minutes, we reached Gapyeong. There was a long line around the Tourism Center. One of
us went inside the center to inquire. We then figured out that the line is for the Gapyeong Shuttle Bus (5,000KRW unlimited used for a day). Since we’d just decided to go to Nami Island along, we simply took a Taxi from Gapyeong Station to the Ferry Station of Nami Island. Travel time approximately 10 minutes. Fare: 3,000KRW

Admission Fee to Nami Island is 8,000KRW. It includes return ferry trip. You may opted to try the Zip-Wire (Zip Line) which is 38,000KRW which includes one way ferry.

Below is the video I made from my Nami Island Trip.

Around 3:50PM, we rode back from Nami Island towards the Ferry station in Gapyeong side as we need to catch the 4:30PM ITX schedule from Gapyeong to Yongsan. Then again, we hailed a taxi and paid 3,000KRW..

We arrived in Yongsan Station 5:30PM. Since we haven’t had our lunch yet, only snacks in Nami, we went out from the Station in searched for any restaurants to satisfy our hungry stomachs. By the time I went outside the station, my body started to shiver. It was really really really cold. I already wearing 2 thermal shirts, 2 long sleeves, 1 fleece jacket and the outer thick jacket yet, I was still freezing.

I immediate bought some freshly cooked red bean cake just outside the station to somehow place something warm inside my stomach. Good thing that several restaurants were located just a few blocks away.

We had a Bulgogi for dinner. It cost 6,000KRW per person. When our order was served, we took a photo of the entire set and sent the photo to our host to confirm if the restaurant served enough amount for what we paid for. We sort of doubted the lady in the restaurant because she doesn’t speak English. We only do sign language and just pointing the picture on the menu.

After are sumptuous dinner, we went to E-Mart in the vicinity of Yongsan Station, and bought some snack for later that evening and for tomorrow’s.
